I've been playing around with a great application called Nodal, which is a kind of modular sequencer that transmits MIDI signals. What's really cools is that besides having your basic 16 note sequence, you can put in random markers that go off and play different sections like so;
Brilliant for trying out new ideas, I even have a copy at work running quicktime synths that I use for coming up with drum patterns.
